Scuba-Diving & Water Sports in Bintan Island

Bintan Island’s rich underwater treasures create an ideal environment for snorkelling and scuba-diving activities. Its waters are gentle enough even for novices.

The best time to go to get the best out of such activities is between April and October, where opportunities to catch sight of some amazing marine species such as giant cuttlefish, reef sharks, blue-spotted rays and moray eels are aplenty. The most popular diving spots around the island are Sandy Bay, Maoi Island and Mapor Island, where visibility is good and the variety of fish is abundant.

With its favourable weather conditions, Bintan Island is also popular amongst water-sports enthusiasts. A wide variety of water-sports facilities are available which include kayaking, jet-skiing, wake-boarding, windsurfing, sailing, canoeing and fishing, and most resorts offer them, especially ones with their own beach clubs or sports centres, although the type of facilities available may vary from one resort to another. It’s worth to take note that there are generally two water-sports seasons here in Bintan: big waves abound from November to March, providing a perfect environment for wind-based sports such as surfing and windsailing, while the seas are calmer from April to October, perfect for scuba-diving, jet-skiing and fishing.
